At least 20 people smashed a window and broke into a Superior Grocers in South Los Angeles on Sunday, Aug. 30, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said.

More than 50 vehicles had shut down the intersection of Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street in the Florence neighborhood for an illegal street takeover. The break-in began around 4:30 a.m., according to NBC Los Angeles.

Three employees were inside the store at the time. They called police, then fled to the second floor and hid while the group grabbed merchandise and ran.

No one was injured.

Officers who responded took one person into custody. Police said they do not yet know how much merchandise was taken. Video from the scene showed food and products strewn across the floor, shelves emptied and alcohol bottles missing, according to NBC Los Angeles. It was not clear when the store would reopen.

The investigation is ongoing. The LAPD has not named a spokesperson or provided a detailed statement about the incident.

The Superior Grocers burglary is the latest in a string of break-ins tied to street takeovers across Los Angeles County. AutoZone locations in East Los Angeles, Watts and Downey were broken into four times within days, all around 3 a.m., ABC7 reported.

A group also broke into Lorena Pharmacy in Boyle Heights during a separate takeover. Video showed thieves cutting metal security bars on the windows before smashing the glass and running inside, according to ABC7.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) announced Wednesday, Aug. 26, that its Street Racing Task Force is targeting takeover organizers and participants. The department said it is working to hold organizers accountable through arrests, vehicle impounds, citations and criminal prosecution.

The LASD conducted an enforcement operation Sunday, Aug. 23, in Compton, Carson, Lakewood, East Los Angeles and Lynwood. Deputies issued 19 citations, arrested six people and impounded four vehicles for 30 days, according to the Daily News.

The LAPD also operates a Street Takeover Task Force that partners with the LASD and the California Highway Patrol. Anyone with information about the Superior Grocers burglary can contact the LAPD.
