Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Byron Scott will face a civil jury alone on Sept. 8 in Van Nuys after Campbell Hall, the Studio City private school where the alleged assault occurred, reached a confidential settlement with accuser Hayley Dylan.

The settlement amount is under seal until the conclusion of Scott's trial, according to the Los Angeles Times. Dylan is seeking unspecified economic and non-economic damages from Scott, who she alleges sexually assaulted her in a janitor's closet on the Campbell Hall campus in 1987, when she was 15 years old.

Scott was 26 and married at the time.

What the complaint alleges

According to Dylan's complaint, the encounter happened during the filming of an instructional basketball video by several Lakers players in the Campbell Hall gym. Dylan alleges she and Scott walked away from faculty members and the production crew, and that Scott forced sexual contact on her in a janitor's closet despite her protests.

Scott has admitted the sexual contact but maintains he did not know Dylan was a student. In court filings, he asserted he believed Dylan, whose surname was Mendell at the time, was 18 and part of the video production crew.

School's failed exit from the case

Campbell Hall tried to remove itself from the litigation, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lee S. Arian denied its motion for summary judgment in January. In his ruling, Arian wrote that Dylan "was the only student selected to remain after others left, yet no one checked on her whereabouts during lunch and no one looked for Scott and plaintiff while they were alone … The evidence reflects that plaintiff's whereabouts were effectively ignored."

The school's settlement followed that ruling. Campbell Hall has not commented publicly on the agreement.

The offset fight

Scott's attorney Linda Bauermeister filed a brief around Aug. 19 arguing that the full Campbell Hall settlement should be subtracted from any jury award to Dylan. In the filing, Bauermeister argued that although Scott does not know the sealed settlement amount, he is entitled to a full offset against any award the jury decides he must pay.

Dylan's attorney Kerry Garvis Wright countered that a non-settling defendant is only entitled to an offset for economic damages and that Campbell Hall's settlement covers solely non-economic damages such as emotional distress.

How the case got here

Dylan filed the lawsuit on Dec. 30, 2022, two days before the window created by California's Child Victims Act (AB 218) closed. That law opened a three-year period from Jan. 1, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2022, allowing previously time-barred childhood sexual abuse claims to proceed.

Bauermeister said in a 2025 statement that Scott is devastated by the complaint, believed Dylan was over 18 and had no idea she would claim otherwise until 35 years later.

Scott grew up in Los Angeles, attended Inglewood's Morningside High School, spent 11 of his 14 NBA seasons with the Lakers and won three championships. He later coached five NBA teams over 15 seasons, including the Lakers from 2014 to 2016.

Jury selection begins Sept. 8 in Van Nuys.
