Jake Reiner has not spoken to his brother Nick since Nick was arrested for stabbing their parents to death in their Brentwood home eight months ago.

In his first television interview since the Dec. 14, 2025, killings of film director and actor Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, the couple's eldest son told ABC7's Marc Cota-Robles that the aftermath has been "a living nightmare."

Jake Reiner, 34, said the months since have warped his sense of time. "…It's been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time," he said in the interview published Thursday, Aug. 27. "And it also feels like eight minutes because every moment that I wake up, I'm reminded of my reality."

Nick Reiner, 32, faces two counts of murder with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait after a Los Angeles County grand jury indicted him July 20. The indictment, unsealed Aug. 12, also alleges he personally used a knife.

He pleaded not guilty.

The lying-in-wait allegation makes Nick Reiner eligible for life without parole or the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors have not announced whether they will seek death.

Jake Reiner said he has not attended any of his brother's court hearings. He declined to say whether he was surprised Nick was suspected, and declined to discuss Nick's fight to access family trust money for his defense.

He did describe the night he learned his parents were dead. He was at a celebration of life for a high school friend at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles when his sister Romy called.

"Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, 'I can't find mom.' I immediately went into shock," he said.

Investigators found both parents in the master bedroom area of the family's Brentwood home. Nick Reiner was arrested in Exposition Park roughly 12 hours later, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Jake Reiner, a former television news reporter who spent about 10 years covering crime in California, said arriving at his childhood home that night was unlike anything he had experienced on the job. "When it's your crime scene, a crime scene at your childhood home, it's like the most surreal thing I've ever seen," he said.

Both Jake and Romy Reiner testified before the grand jury that indicted their brother, according to Page Six. The content of their testimony has not been made public.

No motive has been disclosed. A court order has prevented the Los Angeles County chief medical examiner from releasing the autopsy reports, and prosecutors have said nothing publicly about why the killings occurred.

Nick Reiner is incarcerated at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. He has petitioned probate court for access to a trust his parents established, claiming he is owed $558,000 that became due when he turned 30 in 2023. His civil attorneys argue the money is not an inheritance but a pre-existing distribution unrelated to the deaths. A probate hearing is set for Oct. 23.

Nick Reiner's next criminal court date is a pretrial hearing Sept. 15.
