Thousands of fans stampeded and players from both teams hit the ground Saturday night after a loud sound resembling a gunshot erupted during the San Pedro-King/Drew season opener at LA Southwest College's Cougar Stadium in South Los Angeles.

The game was called off. City Section commissioner Vicky Lagos ruled it would not be resumed, awarding San Pedro the 21-6 victory.

The sound came late in the third quarter on Aug. 22, seconds after San Pedro senior quarterback Seth Solario punched in a 1-yard touchdown run to extend the Pirates' lead. What followed was chaos.

"It was crazy," San Pedro head coach Corey Walsh said. "It sure sounded like a gunshot. Thousands of people were running."

Players and coaches from both teams dove for cover on the field and stayed down for roughly 10 minutes, Walsh said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department received a shots-fired call at approximately 8:52 p.m. and placed the area on lockdown, according to KTLA. Deputies evacuated students and spectators north toward Imperial Highway while searching for a suspect, ABC7 reported.

Dozens of police cars arrived on scene. Deputies found no evidence of a shooting and no gunshot victims.

Video from the scene showed at least one woman being taken away on a stretcher. The nature of her injuries was not immediately clear.

Walsh said deputies escorted his players behind the bleachers and onto their bus. He never got to address his team after the game.

"It's a lame ending to the night but overall I thought we accomplished our number one objective which is to attack," Walsh told the Daily Breeze. "I was really proud of them for that."

The incident was not connected to a fatal shooting that occurred the same night at a high school football game in Bakersfield, where a 17-year-old was killed at the Independence-Centennial game, LA County authorities confirmed.

Before the scare, the game itself had been competitive. King/Drew trailed just 7-6 at halftime after junior wide receiver Jarr Muhamed scored on a pass from the 38-yard line from quarterback Gerald Torres, a junior transfer from Baltimore. San Pedro pulled away in the second half with an 80-yard scoring drive featuring senior running back Michael Artiga and senior wide receiver Jaxon Brown before Solario's short plunge made it 21-6.

King/Drew head coach Joe Torres said he liked what he saw from his squad despite the loss. He pointed to his quarterback's performance and said the Golden Eagles would improve on special teams, defense and offense.

LA Times high school sports reporter Eric Sondheimer reported that Lagos's ruling was final and San Pedro's win stands.

No statement from LAUSD or the Sheriff's Department on crowd safety protocols at high school games has been released. Cougar Stadium hosts multiple local teams and does not belong to a single school.

San Pedro (1-0) hosts West Torrance next. King/Drew (0-1) travels to Culver City.
