Stumptown Coffee Roasters is planting its flag back inside Los Angeles city limits on Saturday, Aug. 29, opening a flagship cafe inside the century-old Starland Theatre building on North Broadway in Lincoln Heights.

The Portland-born roaster closed its Arts District location on Santa Fe Avenue in January 2024 after a decade of service. While a Pasadena outpost opened the following month, the Lincoln Heights shop marks Stumptown's first cafe within LA proper in more than two and a half years.

The new space at 2624 N. Broadway doubles as a barista training hub and retail cafe, according to LA Magazine. Director of retail Julianne Pike said the location is meant to reflect the character of the neighborhood it serves.

"Starland embodies that philosophy, honoring the building's history through details like its historic theater relief facade and original terrazzo tile while creating a space that's warm, welcoming and distinctly Stumptown," Pike said.

The building itself carries real history. The Starland Theatre was built in 1912, designed by architect George B. Campbell for the Huntington Land & Improvement Company, and originally seated about 800. It later operated under Fox West Coast Theaters Corp. The auditorium was demolished decades ago, but the front facade survived in retail use.

Then came a surprise. A January 2025 renovation uncovered the original terracotta "Starland Theatre" sign and an arched window that had been hidden under plaster for roughly 90 years.

The grand opening runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Stumptown will serve its standard menu alongside limited-edition drinks created for the occasion: a passion fruit espresso tonic and a horchata cold foam shakerato. Custom Starland-branded merchandise will also be available.

Stumptown, a third-wave coffee pioneer alongside Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia, now operates two Southern California locations. The Pasadena cafe at 1982 Lincoln Ave. remains open.

Regular hours at the Lincoln Heights flagship begin Sunday, Aug. 30: daily, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
