No. 21 UCLA forced seven turnovers and beat No. 13 Oregon 17-15 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on Saturday, Oct. 10, the Bruins' first win in Oregon since 2004.
UCLA entered as an 11½-point underdog and lost starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava to a lower-body injury late in the second quarter.
None of it mattered.
The Bruins' defense smothered the Ducks, holding them to 272 total yards, 73 rushing yards and just 1-for-12 on third-down conversions, according to the L.A. Daily News. UCLA also picked off two passes, giving the Bruins 10 interceptions on the season, the most in the nation.
The win pushed UCLA to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play. First-year head coach Bob Chesney became the first coach in program history to start 5-0. Oregon, ranked as high as No. 2 in the preseason, fell to 3-2.
Knight carried the offense
Running back Wayne Knight, a James Madison transfer who followed Chesney to Westwood, rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries and scored both UCLA touchdowns. His 35-yard rushing score in the first half and a 9-yard receiving touchdown in the third quarter from backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach provided all the points the defense needed.
Knight was an AP second-team All-American all-purpose player at JMU in 2025, according to the Culver City Observer.
"From the start, we came out, we punched them, and we just kept on going," Knight said after the game. "We had a couple of mishaps, but we bounced back every single time."
Iamaleava's status uncertain
Iamaleava finished 10 for 17 for 162 yards with two interceptions and a fumble before leaving in the second quarter. After the game, Chesney told reporters he initially thought Iamaleava took a hit to the quad but added "there might be a little bit more to it," according to Yahoo Sports. No timeline for his return has been announced.
Dieffenbach, a senior from Agoura High and a Cal Poly transfer in his first season at UCLA, stepped in and went 3 for 6 for 43 yards with the touchdown pass to Knight.
Oregon's collapse
Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola, starting in place of Dante Moore, who has been in concussion protocol since Sept. 26, completed just 6 of 19 passes for 43 yards and threw two interceptions. He was benched in the fourth quarter for third-string quarterback Brock Thomas, according to OregonLive.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning said turnovers defined the loss, telling reporters the team could not keep giving short fields to its defense. The Ducks' defense spent 39 minutes and 15 seconds on the field.
Late drama
Thomas connected with Evan Stewart on a 44-yard touchdown pass with 2:16 remaining to cut UCLA's lead to 17-15. Oregon's two-point conversion attempt failed after a UCLA facemask penalty moved the ball to the 1½-yard line. Jordon Davison was stuffed short of the end zone.
Oregon got the ball back with 43 seconds left at its own 5-yard line and reached the 37 before a desperation lateral sequence ended the game.
What's next
UCLA heads to Wisconsin next week. The Bruins are not projected to face another ranked opponent until Nov. 28 against No. 19 USC. Oregon hosts Nebraska, which enters at 5-1 and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
