Three people are dead and five others injured after an SUV crashed into a Metro bus in Chatsworth on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The collision happened just after 5 p.m. in the 20900 block of Nordhoff Street, near De Soto Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The bus was traveling on Line 166, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, LAFD spokesperson Jennifer Middleton said. Six others were rushed to hospitals. The driver of the SUV later died from injuries at a hospital, Metro spokesman Jose Ubaldo told Spectrum News, bringing the death toll to three.

The SUV ended up partially inside the bus, according to NBC Los Angeles. An L.A. Urban Search and Rescue team extricated multiple people from the wreckage, the Los Angeles Times reported. One person was also found beneath the vehicle.

Video broadcast from the scene showed firefighters working to free a woman trapped inside the bus, according to Spectrum News. Crews on scene described her injuries as "crushing." Her condition was unknown.

At the peak of the response, 56 LAFD personnel were on scene, Middleton said. She said the intersection would be closed for "quite some time" as investigators worked.

No cause has been determined. LAPD and LAFD cordoned off the area as the investigation continued Tuesday evening.

Mayor Karen Bass went to the scene. She said on X that she was on scene receiving updates from LAFD and public safety officials and expressed gratitude to first responders.

LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath addressed the crash at a news conference later that evening. "This has been a deeply traumatic day for far too many people," Horvath said. "There are serious questions about what happened tonight. We share a commitment with our city partners, with our partners at Metro, federal agencies and our public safety agencies to fully understand what happened."

The identities of the three people killed have not been released. Gender and age details for the victims were also not available, according to NBC Los Angeles.

The bus crash occurred on the same evening as a separate NBC4 news helicopter crash in Chatsworth roughly two hours later. That incident killed three additional people. The helicopter had been covering the bus collision.
