Shohei Ohtani landed on the injured list for the first time in his career Wednesday, Sept. 9, to rest his ailing right biceps before the playoffs.

The Dodgers called up 21-year-old Josue De Paula from Double-A Tulsa to fill Ohtani's roster spot. De Paula, rated the No. 6 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, is scheduled to make his major league debut as the designated hitter Friday, Sept. 11, when the Dodgers open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park.

"We tried to kick the can as much as we could," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "It's more of let's take the 15 days and get him reset, get him feeling better, and then build him back up to get the best of him for the postseason."

The move came after a 14-1 rout of the Cincinnati Reds at Dodger Stadium. Ohtani played Monday, Sept. 7, and took a swing that Roberts said "didn't feel great," triggering the decision. Roberts acknowledged he had second thoughts about not placing Ohtani on the IL the previous week.

Ohtani leads the Dodgers with 30 home runs and 80 RBIs but has not homered or driven in a run since Aug. 18. He managed just nine at-bats in September before the placement. The right biceps issue has flared at least two other times this season. General manager Brandon Gomes told the Los Angeles Times on Sept. 3 that it was "an ebb-and-flow type thing."

Ohtani will stay in Los Angeles to consult with doctors while the team travels on a seven-game road trip. Roberts said the plan is to shut Ohtani down for two to three days, then slowly ramp him back up. As a two-way player, Ohtani falls under the 15-day IL category rather than the 10-day list for position players. He is eligible to return for the final week of the regular season.

De Paula arrives with numbers that demand attention. He slashed .303/.401/.547 with 27 home runs, 104 RBIs and 106 runs scored at Tulsa. He also stole 31 bases. MLB.com flagged his defense as a weakness but said a strong showing in September could earn him a spot on the postseason roster.

The Dodgers rolled without Ohtani in Wednesday's blowout. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched seven innings, allowed three hits, struck out 10 to equal a career high and earned his 13th win.

He left to a standing ovation.

Mookie Betts went 3-for-4 with his 19th homer and three runs scored. Kyle Tucker added three hits including a homer. Kiké Hernández drove in four runs, one shy of his season total entering the game.

The win extended the Dodgers' streak to a season-high seven games and pushed them to 32 games over .500. Their magic number to clinch a fifth straight NL West title dropped to six.

Still, the injury list is growing. Ohtani joins center fielder Andy Pages, backup catcher Dalton Rushing, closer Edwin Díaz and right-hander Roki Sasaki on the shelf. First baseman Freddie Freeman also sat out Wednesday with a right knee issue and is hitting .136 in September.

The Dodgers open against Miami on Friday, Sept. 11, at 4:10 p.m. PT.
