Floats, charros on horseback and marching bands will fill Cesar E. Chavez Avenue on Sunday, Sept. 13, for the 80th East LA Mexican Independence Day Parade.

The parade steps off at 10 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. along a 1.5-mile route from Mednik Avenue to Gage Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to The LA Local. A festival follows from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First Street and Mednik Avenue.

Admission is free.

Latin Grammy-nominated singer Dasahev López Saavedra, known as El Dasa, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis will serve as co-grand marshals. El Dasa is a Mexican singer from Hermosillo, Sonora. Solis, who represents East L.A. as the 1st District supervisor, has termed out and is running for a Congressional seat, The Eastsider reported.

The parade will feature show cars, equestrian teams, folklórico dancers and representatives from Eastside organizations. ABC7 will broadcast it live for those who can't attend in person.

What to expect at the festival

The post-parade festival at First Street and Mednik Avenue will include musical performances, food vendors, resource booths and a pop-up from local boutique The Goddess Mercado. East Los Lucha, a Los Angeles-based lucha libre organization, will put on a free showcase. A free pet vaccination clinic will administer vaccines for the first 200 pets.

Street closures and getting there

Drivers should plan ahead. Mednik Avenue between 1st Street and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue closes at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, and stays shut until 9 p.m. Sunday. Cesar E. Chavez Avenue between Vancouver Avenue and Gage Avenue closes from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Limited free parking is available at the East LA Civic Center lot on East 3rd Street and Civic Center Way. The Metro E Line's East LA Civic Center station is a short walk from the event.
