The Emmy Awards will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting in 2027, ending more than 70 years on broadcast television.

The Television Academy, based in North Hollywood, announced the six-year deal on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Prime Video becomes the exclusive global home of the ceremony through 2032, as first reported by the Los Angeles Times. The show will stream live and free, with no subscription required, in more than 240 countries and territories, according to Amazon's official announcement.

The 2027 ceremony will be the first in the awards' 79-year history not to air on a broadcast network. The Emmys have aired on broadcast TV every year since 1955, when NBC first carried the show nationally.

The deal replaces the "wheel deal," a rotation among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox that began in the mid-1990s. That contract expired after NBC aired the 78th Emmy Awards on Sept. 14.

Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said the annual network shuffle had become a burden. "We were essentially starting over every year with the creative process, with the production process and with building new relationships with sponsors," Abrego told the Los Angeles Times. "There were a lot of challenges."

Financial terms were not disclosed. The previous broadcast contract reportedly paid about $8 million a year, according to the LA Times' September reporting on the negotiations. Netflix had explored bidding for the rights but could not reach a deal.

Viewership has declined steadily. The September telecast on NBC drew 6.7 million viewers, per Variety, roughly a 10% drop from the 2025 ceremony on CBS. At its peak, the Emmys attracted more than 20 million viewers.

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the streamer plans to promote Emmy-nominated shows to its subscribers year-round. Amazon already carries the NFL's Thursday Night Football and a portion of the NBA's television rights.

The Emmys are the first of the four major entertainment awards, known as the EGOT (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys), to move exclusively to a streaming platform. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in December 2025 that it would shift the Oscars to YouTube beginning in 2029, ending a more than 50-year run on ABC.

Abrego said the 2027 show will still air live in September. After that, the ceremony's calendar could shift. He told the Associated Press the Academy is open to changing the date in future years. He told the LA Times the event could move as early as May.

Under the deal, Prime Video may also carry other Television Academy programming, including the Hall of Fame and Television Academy Honors ceremonies, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The future of the Creative Arts Emmys telecast, which has aired on FXX, is still being discussed.
