Former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has agreed to plead guilty to charges from a stabbing incident involving an Indianapolis truck driver in October 2025.
Sanchez's attorneys and prosecutors filed a joint motion in Marion County Superior Court asking Judge James Osborn to cancel the jury trial set to begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, and schedule a guilty plea and sentencing hearing instead, according to LA Magazine. The change-of-plea hearing is set for Nov. 9.
The deal avoids what would have been the sixth scheduled court date in a case delayed five times since December 2025.
Sanchez, 39, faces a Level 5 felony charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, plus misdemeanor counts of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, public intoxication and battery resulting in bodily injury. A Level 5 felony in Indiana carries one to six years in prison. The joint motion does not identify which charges are covered by the plea agreement.
Nick Sanchez Jr., the former quarterback's brother and legal adviser, called the filing "a positive development" in a statement to LA Magazine. "We are finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor's office that provides a path toward resolving the state's case," he said.
What happened Oct. 4, 2025
The case traces to the early morning hours of Oct. 4, 2025, when Sanchez was in Indianapolis as part of Fox Sports' broadcast crew for the Colts-Raiders game. According to police and court records, 69-year-old Perry Tole was collecting used cooking oil in his truck near a loading dock between downtown hotels when he encountered Sanchez.
Police alleged Sanchez, who smelled of alcohol, entered Tole's truck without permission and shoved him. Tole used pepper spray, but authorities said Sanchez kept advancing. Tole then pulled a knife.
Sanchez suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper torso and was hospitalized. Tole sustained serious injuries, including a deep facial laceration. Tole told investigators he acted in self-defense and was never charged.
Surveillance footage from nearby buildings confirmed Sanchez approached and entered Tole's truck, Deadline reported. Prosecutors described Sanchez as the alleged aggressor and upgraded the case to include felony battery.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said at an October 2025 news conference that the dispute began over a parking space. "We are literally talking about people fighting over a parking space … and it resulted in someone receiving just incredibly significant injuries," Mears said, as reported by The Athletic.
Fallout and civil case
Fox Sports confirmed in November 2025 that Sanchez was no longer with the network. Drew Brees replaced him on Fox's broadcast team, CNN reported.
Tole also filed a separate civil lawsuit against Sanchez and Fox Corporation shortly after the altercation. That suit later expanded to include Huse Culinary, Inc., the operator of St. Elmo's Steakhouse, alleging the restaurant continued serving Sanchez while he was visibly intoxicated. The civil claims, which include negligence allegations against Fox Corporation, have not been proven in court.
Tole's attorney, Matt Golitko, said in a statement that discussions with Sanchez's team have been "productive" and that Tole "looks forward to an amicable resolution."
LA roots
Sanchez starred at USC from 2005 to 2008, leading the Trojans to a 12-1 record and a Rose Bowl victory over Penn State in his final season. He threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns in that game, earning Rose Bowl Offensive MVP honors.
The New York Jets selected him fifth overall in the 2009 NFL draft. He led the team to back-to-back AFC Championship Games.
A judge must accept the plea before the deal becomes final.
