Phil Jackson, who won more NBA championships than any other coach, will get a statue outside Crypto.com Arena after the Lakers announced the honor on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The unveiling is set for April 9, 2027, when the Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second-to-last game of the regular season, Spectrum News reported. Jackson will become the ninth individual commemorated at Star Plaza, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, Chick Hearn, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Pat Riley and Jerry West.

Jackson won 11 championships as an NBA head coach, surpassing former Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach's nine, according to the Los Angeles Times. Five of those titles came with the Lakers.

He arrived in Los Angeles before the 1999-2000 season after winning six titles with the Chicago Bulls. With O'Neal and Bryant already on the roster, Jackson and assistant coach Tex Winter installed the triangle offense. It worked fast. The Lakers won three straight championships from 2000 to 2002.

After O'Neal was traded to the Miami Heat following the 2003-04 season, Jackson spent a year away from the team before returning. The Lakers later acquired Pau Gasol and won two more titles in 2009 and 2010.

Jackson's Lakers record stands at 610-292 in the regular season and 118-63 in the playoffs, according to CBS Sports. Those 610 wins are the most by any head coach in franchise history. The team made the playoffs in all 11 of his seasons.

Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss, in a statement released with the announcement, said Jackson's coaching restored the franchise's championship legacy and called the statue an honor he deserves. Buss noted that Jackson accepted an invitation from her father, the late Jerry Buss, to join the franchise.

After Jackson's final game as Lakers coach on June 14, 2011, Bryant reflected on his influence. "I grew up under him," Bryant said. He added that Jackson shaped the way he approached basketball and life, saying, "a lot of it comes from him."

Jackson, a Deer Lodge, Montana, native, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. He was later named one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history as part of the league's 75th anniversary celebration.

Sculptor Omri Amrany of Rotblatt Amrany Studio will design and create the statue. The studio has produced statues of Michael Jordan, Bryant, O'Neal, Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson, West and Baylor, among more than 150 public commissions nationwide.

The April 9 ceremony will make Jackson the latest addition to Star Plaza, following Pat Riley as the most recent honoree.
