The driver of an SUV that struck a Metro bus in Chatsworth on Tuesday evening, Sept. 15, was arrested on suspicion of murder Wednesday morning, Sept. 16, the LAPD confirmed.

The suspect, a 36-year-old Simi Valley woman, was booked by the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division and held on $4.03 million bail, according to ABC7. LAPD Media Relations Officer Lee confirmed the arrest to KTLA.

The crash killed two bus passengers. The L.A. County Medical Examiner's Office identified them Wednesday as Gage Weida, 31, and Daniel Castillo, 46.

Castillo died on the bus. Weida died on the street nearby after being thrown from the bus by the force of the collision, MyNewsLA reported.

Six other people were taken to hospitals. The LAPD said one passenger was severely injured and five others suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

The collision happened just after 5 p.m. Sept. 15 in the 20900 block of Nordhoff Street near De Soto Avenue. The Metro Line 166 bus was traveling eastbound on Nordhoff when the suspect's gray 2004 Ford Expedition struck it broadside, according to police.

The driver was traveling south in the northbound lanes of De Soto Avenue when she ran a red light and nearly collided with another vehicle before hitting the bus, the LAPD said. The SUV ended up partially inside the bus.

The LAPD said the impact fully ejected one passenger and partially ejected a second.

Police said the driver is suspected of reckless driving and running a red light combined with possible DUI, NBC Los Angeles reported. The suspect was also injured in the crash and taken to a hospital. An earlier report that she had died was unfounded, according to Metro spokesman Jose Ubaldo.

A witness who gave only her first name, Debbie, told ABC7 the SUV reached "freeway speed" before impact and that the collision generated "the loudest sound I could imagine."

At the height of the emergency response, 56 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel were on scene, LAFD spokesperson Jennifer Middleton said.

Officer Lee said authorities plan to present charges to the District Attorney's Office. No arraignment date has been announced.
