Los Angeles police arrested a 55-year-old man less than 24 hours after a Culver CityBus driver was fatally shot aboard his bus in Mar Vista.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident around 2:07 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the 3600 block of Motor Avenue, according to KTLA. The FBI's Violent Crime Apprehension Task Force assisted LAPD's West Bureau Homicide in locating him. He was booked on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $3 million, and is jailed in Van Nuys.

The shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in the 3900 block of Centinela Avenue, Yo Venice reported. Officers responding to the scene found the driver unresponsive in his seat with gunshot wounds.

The victim's family attorney, Denisse Gastélum, identified the driver as Bruce Rodriguez, 42. LAPD had not officially released his name as of Saturday, Oct. 3. Rodriguez had driven a Culver CityBus for 12 years, Gastélum told the Los Angeles Times.

LAPD Capt. Eric Eppolito said police believe the suspect was intoxicated when he boarded the bus and argued with Rodriguez over a wrong turn.

"That kind of escalated to the point where our suspect pulled out a handgun, some type of handgun in a bag, which led to a couple of shots fired," Eppolito said, as reported by KTLA.

Two other passengers were aboard and were not injured, Eppolito told NBC Los Angeles. The suspect fled on a bicycle he grabbed from a rack on the front of the bus, police said, according to MyNewsLA.

LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division detectives plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office early this week for consideration of formal charges.

Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza announced Thursday evening, Oct. 1, that Culver CityBus service would be suspended through Sunday to give employees time to grieve.

Hundreds gathered Saturday night, Oct. 3, at Centinela and Mitchell avenues for a candlelight vigil, ABC7 reported. Rodriguez's wife, Sandy Sanchez, and other family members attended. His sister-in-law Kathy Sanchez said Rodriguez used to hand out Hot Wheels cars to younger riders on his route.

Rodriguez is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 3 and 6 months. A GoFundMe organized by Kathy Sanchez had raised more than $78,600 toward a $150,000 goal as of Saturday night, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A family attorney also told ABC7 that Rodriguez had been threatened with a knife about a month before the shooting. That claim has not been independently confirmed.
