LAPD officers shot and killed a man who advanced on them with a pole saw in Boyle Heights on Monday morning, Sept. 7.

Hollenbeck Division patrol officers responded around 9:55 a.m. to a radio call about a man allegedly armed with a metal pipe in the 600 block of Gillette Street, the LAPD's Media Relations Division said on X.

When officers arrived, they found the man carrying not a pipe but a large tree trimmer with an approximately 12-inch serrated blade.

The man refused repeated orders to drop the weapon and kept advancing toward officers, the department said. Officers attempted to reposition before the shooting occurred.

The man was struck by gunfire. Officers provided medical attention at the scene. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics then transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to MyNewsLA.

No officers or community members were injured.

The LAPD's Force Investigation Division, known as FID, responded to the scene to lead the investigation into the shooting. The department cautioned that all information released so far is preliminary. Multiple witnesses still need to be interviewed, including the officers involved, and video from the scene still needs to be reviewed.

The man's identity has not been released. Authorities have not disclosed how many officers fired or how many rounds were discharged.

The initial radio call described the weapon as a metal pipe. The LAPD's own follow-up account clarified the object was a pole saw, a long-handled tree trimmer with a serrated cutting blade. KTLA reported that Sky5's Rich Prickett was over the scene around 11 a.m. He observed what appeared to be a pole saw on the sidewalk with an evidence marker near where the man had been treated.

Streets near Gillette and Bridge Street, close to Prospect Park, were blocked off as the investigation continued, KTLA reported.

No timeline for the completion of the FID review has been announced.
