Rob Reiner won a posthumous Emmy for his guest role on "The Bear," earning a standing ovation at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 6.

The award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series marks Reiner's third career Emmy and his first in nearly 48 years. His previous two wins came for playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic on "All in the Family" in 1974 and 1978.

Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead from stab wounds inside their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested that same day and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances.

He has pleaded not guilty.

"It's appropriate to stand for this one," presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey told the audience, who rose for a standing ovation. "I know we all wish Rob could be here tonight."

McLendon-Covey accepted the award on Reiner's behalf, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Jamie Lee Curtis, also nominated for "The Bear," watched from the audience. Curtis had encouraged Reiner to take the role, according to Just Jared, citing Deadline.

Reiner played Albert Schnurr in Season 4 of the FX series, a businessman who helps line cook Ebraheim, played by Edwin Lee Gibson, formulate a new strategy for the restaurant's beef sandwich window. Albert's advice inspired a key storyline about franchising the sandwich operation, TheWrap reported.

Though Reiner did not appear in the show's fifth and final season, "The Bear" paid tribute to him in its finale earlier this summer. In the scene, Ebraheim calls Albert and closes the conversation with "as you wish," a nod to Reiner's 1987 film "The Princess Bride."

The Emmy win lands in the middle of an unresolved criminal case. A Los Angeles County grand jury indictment unsealed Aug. 12 charged Nick Reiner with murder with special circumstances, including allegations of lying in wait. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Nick Reiner faces death or life in prison without parole if convicted.

Nick Reiner is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Department 108 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles. A separate hearing on his bid to access more than $500,000 from a family trust to pay for his defense was continued to Oct. 23.

His brother Jake Reiner, in an Aug. 27 interview with ABC7, said he has not spoken to Nick since their parents' deaths. "I'll never understand … I don't care what facts come out. I will never understand why this happened," Jake Reiner said.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards air Monday, Sept. 14, on NBC, hosted by Mariska Hargitay. Reiner is expected to be honored in the In Memoriam segment.
