Solorio, Casas lead LA prep football's Week 3 standouts

San Pedro quarterback Seth Solorio completed 13 of 17 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-7 rout of Bell on Friday, Sept. 11. The ball vanished in the unmowed grass before snaps.

The performance headlined a Week 3 slate packed with standout efforts across City Section and Southern Section play, as compiled by the Los Angeles Times.

San Pedro (4-0) built a 35-7 halftime lead while Solorio went 10 of 11 for 175 yards before the break. Braeden Villegas hauled in touchdown catches of 52 and 17 yards. Tight end Joaquin Fernandez took a screen pass 94 yards for a score. Punt returner Chazz Fugatti sprinted 80 yards through the thickest patch of grass for another touchdown.

Nobody had mowed Bell's field that week, according to Bell coach Noel Padilla. San Pedro assistant coach Andres Srsen was pulling grass by hand before kickoff so kicker Dylan Moreno could practice field goals.

"It does feel like a corn field," Fugatti told the LA Times after the game. "It was fun."

Solorio now has 14 touchdown passes through four games. He set a San Pedro school record with seven TD passes against Westchester in Week 2. The LA Times called San Pedro a strong contender for a City Section Open Division playoff berth.

Fairfax running back Tru Warrior Casas ground out 280 yards on 30 carries against Eagle Rock, adding to a breakout season that included a 251-yard, four-touchdown opener against Hollywood on Aug. 22.

At Carson, linebacker Preston Leomiti strip-sacked Long Beach Poly's quarterback, scooped the fumble and returned it for a first-quarter touchdown that gave the Colts a two-touchdown lead. Kicker Monico Flores-Segovia drilled a 34-yard field goal for the winning points in a 17-14 upset.

Compton's Edward Rivera accounted for five touchdowns against Gardena, scoring twice on the ground, twice through the air and once on an interception return. Granada Hills running back Olawale Adeleye rushed for 211 yards and four touchdowns in a loss to Kennedy. Palisades Charter High running back LJ Stephens carried 26 times for 176 yards and three scores in a four-overtime win over Brentwood.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame's special teams dominated Oaks Christian. Kicker Charles Szaras booted eight touchbacks, went six for six on extra points and connected on field goals of 45 and 27 yards. Quincy Hearn added an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

In the Southern Section's marquee matchup, Mater Dei edged Corona Centennial 10-9 to improve to 4-0. Jerry Shifman hit a 34-yard field goal and the game-winning extra point. Defensive end Mike Davis Jr. recorded a sack and an interception.
